Maintenance issues for natural play areas

I would like to congratulate Sue Gutteridge on overcoming the fears and constraints to implement some inspirational play areas.

When I suggest greater use of natural materials to people planning a new play area, the greatest objection (apart from fear of vandalism as raised by Peter Cunningham on another thread) is the lack of maintenance budgets and skills sets within playground maintenance departments. It does seem in fairness that many maintenance budgets are woefully low.

I'm interested to know how Sue has dealt with this and what maintenance issues have arisen. Also whether the maintenance burden is greater or worse than your original expectations?
